Whatever the reason, hiring the services of a solicitor is a decision often not made lightly. If you’re going through, or anticipate going through a difficult period, turning to a trusted solicitor for guidance and legal advice should be a stress-free process.

That said, finding the right firm to handle your case is crucial and requires a great deal of care and attention. Here are a few questions you should ask your solicitor:

Have you handled a similar case previously?

The first question you’ll need to ask is whether they have helped someone in a similar situation previously. To stand a good chance, ideally your solicitor will have some experience relating to your situation.

Can you simplify the complex talk?

If you’re not familiar with how solicitors talk, their complex terminology and jargon can be daunting and overwhelming. As you’ll want to be kept updated with the case’s progress, it’s worth asking your solicitor if they’re willing to simplify their language in a way that’s easy for you to understand.

Do I pay upfront or once the case is closed?

Arguably the most important question to ask your solicitor is roughly how much their services will cost and when you’re expected to make payment. In most cases, they will be able to provide at least an indication of the estimated cost and payment due date. That said, if you feel you may struggle to make payment on time, don’t be afraid to negotiate a better arrangement.

What type of cases do you deal with most often?

Asking this question will help give you a better understanding of your solicitor’s expertise, but it’s important to remember that, even if they don’t often deal with situations like yours, they may have similar experience which can play to your advantage.

Roughly how long does the process take?

Each case is bespoke, so your solicitor won’t always be able to give you a definitive answer. However, they may provide you with a rough estimate once they receive all the details needed for your case.

How often will I be updated of the case’s progress?

If you want to be updated at every point of the case’s progress, you should raise this with your solicitor before they get started. They may allocate you a point of contact who will reach out, so you don’t need to worry.
