Former staff and guests have been invited to celebrate our 90th anniversary.
The anniversary evening event on May 16th takes place at our historic St Edward Street office in Leek, once home to celebrated Leek industrialist Sir Thomas Wardle. Bowcock & Pursaill was founded here in 1927 by Philip Thornley Bowcock.
Among those attending will be our founder’s widow, Sylvia Bowcock, and nephew Philip Parnell Bowcock, together with Leek Deputy Mayor Councillor Stephen Wales, longstanding clients of the firm and current and former members of staff.
Firm partner, Ian Naylor, said the evening was particularly special and well timed, falling just two weeks after Philip Parnell Bowcock’s own 90th birthday.
He said: “Philip Thornley Bowcock was joined in the late 1930s by Howard Pursaill, hence our name, and it was largely Howard who kept the business running during the war when Philip went away to serve in the RAF as a squadron leader.
“We’re delighted to have Sylvia Bowcock and Philip Parnell Bowcock joining us for this special occasion. Philip joined Bowcock & Pursaill in 1969 having been in the civil service, and became a partner with the firm until he retired in 1995.
“This is a very special time for us, as there are not many businesses which can say they have been in business for 90 years. It seemed only right to celebrate this milestone and to take this opportunity to thank our longstanding clients and staff.”
Philip Thornley Bowcock historically built the business up around agricultural law matters, for which we continue to have a strong reputation.
Today we provide legal advice across a full range of matters including tax planning, commercial property, wills and probate, disputes, agricultural, matrimonial and residential work for both corporate and private clients.
We have 35 staff and partners and offices across Staffordshire in Leek, Hanley, Uttoxeter and most recently Eccleshall, which we opened in 2015.
Bowcock & Pursaill has appointed Heather Reynolds as the latest partner at the firm. Having joined the team more than 14 years ago, Heather is the epitome of climbing the career ladder, starting out as Office Assistant. Very quickly Heather became interested in training as a solicitor and started working her way up the ranks. She progressed to Receptionist first before becoming a Legal Secretary at the firm at 21 where she worked for Commercial Property Specialist, Tom Gregory and Residential Property Specialist, Emma Amat. In April 2024, there will be significant changes to UK redundancy rules. Currently, employers have a legal obligation to offer suitable alternative employment, where a vacancy exists, to an employee who is on maternity leave, shared parental or adoption leave, if their job is at risk of redundancy. This is limited to the duration of the relevant leave. Working with Partner Catherine Whittles and the corporate and commercial property team has been nothing but positive for Mr Khanal for the past 13 years. Under the Employment Rights Act 1996, the Neonatal Care Act will be introduced to support employees who have a newborn baby receiving palliative or medical care. Currently there is no specific right for carers to take leave.
